We then continued East. We stopped for a brief walk at the Mossy Cave, which turned out quite disappointing, but at least Markus managed to take a shower under a small waterfall:
The next stop, after passing through a few tiny and desolate Mormone towns, is Kodachrome Basin. Klaus asks if there are any bike trails there, and the ranger told us two. Of course Erik is excited, so we take the bike trail. It turns out that the trail is rather destroyed by rain and horses, plus it is mainly in sand. That, combined with the time of the day (approx 14:00), turns the bike ride into a fascinating adventure with great scenery, a few cool descents, but also many boiling hot ascents. Still, it is worth it!
After the two-hour bike ride, we continue down the road towards Escalante. There, Klaus wants to find out how to get to the Slot Canyons in the wilderness. We stop at the visitor center, but it is closed already. However, a friendly lady still gives us some pieces of paper with descriptions of how to get there.
We continue on to downtown Escalante, which even has a high school, and we find some more information at the Escalante Outfitters Cafe.Apparently, even an RV can go down the dirt road 7,8 miles to the trailhead, then hike a few miles and with a bit of luck, find the canyon. We will find out tomorrow.
We then head on to the campground at Escalante Petrified Forest, which we do not like because it is very exposed and not level. So we go on to Calf Creek where we get the last site with full sunshine. So we turn on the generator for the first time to get some aircondition going. Klaus and the boys go to the creek to take a bath, where we chat with some folks from Los Angeles. At night, we play some Munchkin, eat chips and are glad that it actually does cool off. We get a good night´s sleep and pledge to get up early so we are not in the desert at a silly hour.
