4.7. Monterey, California. Independence Day
Today is the 4th of July...the most important holyday in the USA. We were thinking about going to the parade with Ricky and Yasmin, but Charlie lit a fire again and somehow everybody got together around the fireplace to read, computerize and anjoy the coziness and the Gemütlichkeit! Obviously by the time we left the house the parade was about to begin. We still got to see some of the group though... it was an all-American experience, especially for Markus, he was waving to everybody, clapping and looking very happy. A lot of people were wearing white, read and blue (including Ricardo) and I saw a few girls wearing beautiful dresses with stripes and stars and red ribbons in their hair.
Afterwards, Charlie joined us and we wanted to go eat a hot-dog but nobody was hungry and the crowd was amazing. We decided to go to the Monterey Institute and show the kids the place where we got to know each other and where we studied our Masters degree. We also showed them where we used to live on Van Buren Ave. Everything looks more or less the same but the school is now a member of the Middleburry College and they have bought a lot of new premises including the house we used to live in. After taking some pictures we walked to the Fisherman´´s Wharf and had a Clam-Chowder in a bowl of bread. I had a Mexican shrimp-cocktail. Everything was very festive: you could see people everywhere eating ice-cream and having a good time. We watched the seals for a while and then eat an ice-cream ourselves.
We came back to the Friendly Plaza in front of the City Hall, where the concert had already begun. It was a band from San Francisco and they were playing things from Queen, Bon Jovi and a few people were dancing.
The kids wanted to go home after a while. We stopped at a play-ground Yasmin, Ricardo; Markus and Erik got on a swing and then climbed up a tree. It´´s amazing how well they got along and how they could communicate with each other.
Charlie came to pick us up with the car, they live way up on a hill on Shady Lane and it took us almost half an hour to walk to down-town so up the hill it would have probably take us longer.
We closed the day with a lovely dinner cooked by Charlie: curry chicken with rice and as a dessert, ice-cream again!! I surely can´´t complain about putting on some weight!
Before we went to bed we played some rounds of " Cockroach-salad", showered and said "Good night" and that´´s exactly what I am going to say now: "Good night everybody",
